This Week on Artist & International Dance (9/6)03 Sep 2020, Posted by Uncategorized in
This Sunday the weekly program, Dance Diplomacy with Jonathan, continues:
At 9 a.m. and 12 noon EDT on Sunday, September 6, Dance Diplomacy with Jonathan has Battery Dance Artistic Director and Founder in conversation with two leaders in the field of dance in Mumbai, India – Niloufer Sagar, COO of Terence Lewis Company and Piyush Raj, Kathak dancer and Founder/Director of Natanam Performing Arts Studio.
Both Sagar and Raj are responsible for managing spaces that traditionally serve a wide swath of the Indian dance community for rehearsals and classes in Mumbai. They also represent the different sides of commercial and classical dance in India, giving the audience an understanding of how dancers are coping with the pandemic and what opportunities might lie in the future when fears of contagion are quelled.
At 2 p.m. EDT, Rathna Kumar presents, “The Art of Expression”, a class in the Indian classical dance aspect of abhinaya, the language of mime that telegraphs meaning in the storytelling mode of the South Indian genres of Kuchipudi and Bharatanatyam. A highly awarded dancer, choreographer and teacher, Kumar was one of the pioneers of Indian dance in America from her base in Houston, Texas, where she established a school in 1975 and a performing and presenting unit soon afterwards.
At 4 p.m., the television stage is ceded to Kumar’s disciple, Isha Parupudi, a former Presidential Scholar and current student at Columbia University who, at a young age, has mastered the demanding dance form of Kuchipudi and presents an impeccable and inspiring five-minute solo choreographed by her guru Rathna Kumar herself, with music composed by the late Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna.
