$1 WORKSHOPS


Continuing the tradition of offering ‘free’ workshops as part of the Battery Dance Festival, Battery Dance is proud to offer eight diverse workshops taught by choreographers from around the world. This workshop is limited to 20 students. 

All Workshops take place from 10:30am – 12pm EDT at Battery Dance Studios.

Ballet Nepantla | NYC

Ballet Nepantla leads an open-level Mexican Folklorico class in this one-hour community workshop. Join Festival performers from Ballet Nepantla for a $1 workshop at Battery Dance Studios.

Vanaver Caravan | United States

Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Vanaver Caravan in a workshop led by company members. Experience a slice of Americana while learning how to swing dance.

Monday | Aug 15

Rathna Kumar | United States

The celebrated Kuchipudi choreographer Rathna Kumar will offer a workshop in the art of expression, “Abhinaya”. This is a rare opportunity to learn from one of the world’s finest practitioners, a senior guru who has learned from childhood from the source in Chennai and spread the art form among thousands of students after founding Anjali Center for Indian Performing Arts in Houston more than four decades ago.

Julienne Doko | Denmark

Learn from Julienne Doko, a renowned dancer from Denmark in this African contemporary dance workshop. This class will be accompanied by live musicians.

Fairul Zahid | Singapore

Fairul Zahid, whose complex and highly athletic movement style is rooted in Asian traditions will introduce you to his approach. He emphasizes the body’s relationship to gravity to develop a groundedness in execution through a short combination that will include a western contemporary technique as well.

TeaTime Company | The Netherlands

Enjoy a workshop taught by Netherlands-based TeaTime Company. This class will focus on understanding our relationship with objects: what stories they tell, what memories they hold and how they allow us as dancers to move into different possibilities.

Saturday | Aug 20

Dos Prospociones Dance Theater | Spain

Taught by Raquel Madrid from Spain, the class will focus on physical technique and an understanding of space. The workshop will build towards making material ready to go on stage through different exercises and improvisational games where the body will search for ways to tell stories, to create ideas constructed to have the greatest impact, without forgetting the effect the performer has on all its own creation.
