Soles of Duende

The Kitchen (Excerpt) | World Premiere

The Kitchen is a joyous full-evening stage work rooted in Tap, Flamenco, and Kathak, accompanied by live music. This excerpt explores how rhythm and movement create intimacy and connection. Drawing from cultures shaped by post-meal gatherings, we ask: when conflict persists, how do families come together? Through shared memories of aunties who nourished community through food, the work reflects on bond, tradition, and what we know, and don’t know, about one another.

About the Company

A Brooklyn-born Puerto-Rican from New Haven, a Mexican Puerto-Rican Jew from the Lower East Side, and a Bengali Indian from Jersey walked on to the wooden floor & the rest? History. Bonded by their deep love of music, their crafts, and true connection, Soles of Duende is on a lifelong mission to elevate the joy and music of true collaboration across disciplines and the celebration of the forms they practice. Based in the sounds of Tap (Amanda Castro), Flamenco (Arielle Rosales) and Kathak (Brinda Guha), Soles of Duende’s fire is the spirit that lives within each of these women to celebrate their connection given their beautiful differences and to uplift the forms that made them.

They are a Bessie-nominated group that has graced the stages of The Joyce Theater, Joe’s Pub, Reg Lenna Arts Center, Yale Schwarzman Center, Barnes Foundation, Lincoln Center, Brooklyn Museum, NYU Skirball Center, Danspace Project and more. Soles has been featured on the cover of Dance Magazine, received Critic’s Pick in the NYTimes and was listed as one of NYT’s Best Dance Performances of 2022, with subsequent Sunday Arts features in the NYT in 2024. Starting as an all-acapella dance trio, expanding into a 6-piece ensemble of dancers & musicians, Soles has lit floors on fire since their inception showcasing the power of three women conversing in distinct percussive dance traditions.

For Whom The Bell Tolls

Jessee’s work aims to connect the shared lineage of Tap dance and Breaking while exploring the experience of feeling deeply while appearing composed, and feeling alone even when surrounded by others. Flowerheads | US Premiere

Three baroque characters symbolizing an ecosystem of shifting equilibrium. Insects, flowers, amphibians, fish and a whole host of creatures come to life through the precision and detail of their movements, where reality and fantasy converge in a peculiar Garden of Earthly Delights. Flowerheads is a contemporary dance piece that exudes the pleasure of the ephemeral and the fragility of ecosystems. The music, an original composition by Ed is Dead, emphasizes its dreamlike quality.

We Tell Ourselves Stories

Inspired by the music of Brooklyn-based indie-folk-pop-Americana trio Bandits on the Run, We Tell Ourselves Stories is a high-energy, quirky piece for five dancers set in the deserts of New Mexico. A motley group of desert-dwellers navigates familiar tropes: a love triangle, a case of hero worship, hallucinations and delirium from a grueling desert crossing, and a lost romance.

BODYSONNET

say i am you

say i am you is an ensemble work exploring the psychology of the body in space and the individuals’ value systems as they affect the “central” character. This character is shaped through the agonistic conflict of the dancers – inspired by ecological relationships and the development of a new culture. say i am you is in essence about a constructed world dissolving into a new reality. say i am you was recently performed at Judson Church as part of BODYSONNET’s 7th season.
