Established in 1982, Battery Dance Festival, originally known as the Downtown Dance Festival, has been celebrated as New York City’s longest-running free public dance festival. This year we go virtual for the first time, exploring the past, present and future of our company and the festival we created.

ART-A-HACK / BATTERY DANCE / THOUGHTWORKS ARTS
Dancedemic | World Premiere
Two immigrant dancers in collaboration with 30 technologists explore the intersection between dance and the latest technological advances.
This project is funded through an Alumni TIES small grant from the U.S. Department of State in partnership with Art-A-Hack, ThoughtWorks Arts, and Emotibit.
About the Partner
Art-A-Hack supports teams from a variety of disciplines including art, technology, hardware and software development, design, immersive environments, music, theater, animation, social justice and interactivity. The program matches participants selected from an open call according to skill level, interests and concept. Teams are provided with equipment, facilitation and collaborative workspaces in collaboration with a network of partners. Each iteration of the program then culminates in showcases.

Icarus | World Premiere
Battery Dance Company is proud to present our very own Razvan Stoian’s choreography for the second consecutive Battery Dance Festival. As an expansion of his 2019 world premiere Iron Dove, Stoian utilizes his training in both ballroom and contemporary styles to create a bold and powerful aesthetic on stage. With this new work, we enter a world of human ambition and the struggle of achievement. Based around the Greek mythology, Stoian’s new work Icarus reflects on hubris as our demise in modern progress. How does our ego infringe on our progress? Are our greatest judgments in conflict with our greatest strengths?
The creation and performance of new works by Battery Dance is supported in part by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs with the support of the City Council.
About the Choreographer
Razvan Stoian hails from Constanta, Romania and graduated from the Caragiale Academy of Theatrical Arts and Cinematography winning the “Best Choreography” and “Best Interpretation” awards. He has danced internationally for Tangaj Dance Company, Gigi Caciuleanu Romania Dance Company at Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London, and is a champion ballroom dancer, winning competitions throughout Europe. Razvan was a student participant in Battery Dance’s Dancing to Connect program in Romania in 2013, and subsequently became a teacher trainee, and finally a teacher, leading his own choreographic workshops worldwide with the Company.

About the Artist
Recognized by Battery Dance artist Sean Scantlebury in 2014, while Scantlebury, as US State Department Arts Envoy to the Dutch Caribbean conducted a series of workshops in Curaçao, Reuel Rogers attended Codarts, the renowned dance academy in Rotterdam for one year, before returning to his home island where he has been performing, teaching and choreographing since. Mentorship through Battery Dance have combined with his own contemporary dance sensibilities, producing a style based in urban dance, hip hop and breakdance, which he has modified in such a way as to earn him travel opportunities to China and Egypt for dance competitions, and performances in Nigeria and at the 2019 Battery Dance Festival.
