THIS IS HOW SCHOOL SHOULD BE!”
A dancing student in Stuttgart Germany had this to say about Battery Dance’s “Dancing to Connect” project. Click here to check out our blog and follow the company through photos and text in its German journey

RIVER OF TRUTHS

Early in 2008 Battery Dance Company interacted with the mystical musicians and whirling dervishes of Konya, Turkey while on a State Department tour.  This interaction has bred a new project that will be realized over the next two years.  River of Truths will be unveiled at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center during the first week of March 2009.  Read more about it here

DOWNTOWN DANCE FESTIVAL 2008

This year’s Downtown Dance Festival was a great success!  With 40 talented dance companies, enthusiastic audiences and an unbelievable 9 straight days of sunshine, the Downtown Dance Festival enlivened three diverse spaces: Governors Island, Chase Plaza and Battery Park.  We also had the pleasure of partnering with the Indo-American Arts Council to present two days of Indian Dance as part of their Erasing Borders Festival.  Press clips are coming soon, but in the mean time have a look at some of our New York Times coverage here and here.

If you are interested in applying for the 2009 Downtown Dance Festival, check back here in January for more information!

DANCING TO CONNECT FROM GERMANY TO LOWER MANHATTAN AND BACK

Dancing to Connect is the name coined in Freiburg, Germany, to describe a creative project for teens that was developed there by Battery Dance Company with choreographer Aviva Geismar over the past two summers. In January, we brought the project home with funding from the LMDC, trying it out with 40 students at Millennium High School. The results were displayed on stage at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center on February 13 to stunning effect! Check out the Battery Blog, http://batterydancecompany.blogspot.com/, for a full report on our Dancing to Connect Projects in Stuttgart, Berlin and Freiburg between June 18 and July 16.

ASIAN STAGES PLAY HOST TO BATTERY DANCE FOR THE THIRD YEAR

Battery danced its way through Asia this past spring, beginning in South Korea (Busan and Seoul) on April 12 and finishing up in Beijing on May 10, with exciting programs in Laos, Taiwan and Mongolia in between. Shell Games, Notebooks, I'll Take You There and the newly remounted Moonbeam were performed by Tadej Brdnik, Robin Cantrell, Bafana Matea, Carmen Nicole, Sean Scantlebury and Mayuna Shimizu, who also plied their teaching craft in schools, universities and conservatories. The tour was made possible through the generous support of the EAP and ECA Bureaus of the State Department, as well as U.S. Embassies in each country; and in China, we were hosted in the First International Modern Dance Festival by the Beijing LDTX Dance Company, National Ballet of China and our hospitality sponsor the JW Marriott Hotel! You can read all about the tour here: http://batterydancecompany.blogspot.com/
